5 Minutes with D. Renee Bagby

November 12, 2010

Bio:

Whether as D. Reneé Bagby or Zenobia Renquist, Reneé lives in her imagination. When not traveling through her fantasy worlds, she can be found in MD living with her husband and two cats.

She is an Air Force brat turned Air Force wife, which means she’s accustomed to travel and does it whenever possible (so long as she doesn’t have to fly). Her favorite pastime is torturing her characters on their way to happily-ever-after for the enjoyment of her readers.

On the few occasions her muse flees the scene of the crime, Reneé likes to read (comics, manga, and romance), go to the movies, play a few levels of whichever puzzle game has hijacked her interest or experiment with a new chain maille weave.

What project are you currently working on? (C’mon, give us a hint!)

I’m currently working on a ménage a trois with merman (m/m/f). It should be done fairly soon too. It’s a challenge story that Stephanie Burke issued to me to create a story for the ‘gayest tattoo ever’. Do a search and you’ll see the picture.

What is your favorite snack?

Mac n’ cheese with Crystal hot sauce!! It’s gotta be Crystal.

I have heard from numerous authors that chocolate is the staple of their diet. Is it in yours?

Some may think I’m a freak of nature for saying this but I don’t eat chocolate. I actually avoid all things with caffeine for health reasons. Besides, everyone thinks I’m hyper enough without adding caffeine to the mix.

Will electronic readers ever take the place of the humble paperback?

Nope. There are more and more people turning to e-readers but not everything is available in ebook format and there are still people who love the feel of a book in their hands.

If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be?  And why?

I’d have to go with Eris (also the title of the book). She’s goes through a lot to get two men who really love her beyond all rhyme and reason (hell, they lived through centuries of time just to be with her again. That’s devotion). AND, she gets a bonus at the end of the book. I can’t say what the bonus is though. :P

Who or what influences you when you write?

The need to have my stories finished so I can see how they end is a great motivator. I love reading my own work. I’m my biggest fan. But I can’t read the finished product until I write it.

When you have writer’s block how do you break free?

I edit. I re-read all that I’ve written and edit as I go. Most of the time, that will spark an idea and I’ll start writing again.

Who is your perfect hero?  And why?

An amalgamation of Vin Diesel, Gerard Butler and Hugh Jackman. Those men are HOT and if there was a guy who embodied all three of them in one, I’d be all over him in a hot second. :P

What do you do for inspiration?

Everything around me is inspiration. Any one thing will trigger an idea and away my muse runs with it whether I want her to or not.

Is there a genre of book you would like to write but haven’t yet?

Horror romance. I’m letting it rattle around my brain a bit while I finish some other projects-in-progress. Once I jump into it, I plan to let the evil out and see what happens. *eg*

What kind of research do you do for your books?  Do you enjoy the research process?

I’m a world builder. Most of my research entails finding out how certain laws (and inventions and idiosyncrasies of a nation) in the real world came about so I can shape why the law exists on my new world or why is doesn’t. The research process is a bit annoying but necessary to ensure my world is as believable as possible.

What is your favorite movie of all time?  The one where you can watch it and still get affected at the same spots each and every time?

I have several of those. I’m a movie fanatic. ‘How To Train Your Dragon’, ‘Just Wright’, ‘300’, ‘Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust’, ‘Watchmen’, ‘Terminator’, ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’, ‘Boondock Saints I & II’, ‘Clerks I & II’… I could go on and on.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what 5 things would you have with you? *mind you, you do have a strong hunky man to help you withthings* *grins*

  • I’d have my trusty mini laptop with a dedicated internet connection. Gotta make sure I can get my stories written and off to my publishers.
  • An ereader with the entirety of my book collection on it, including my manga collection. And since I’d have my internet connection, I can always get updates.
  • A tricked out entertainment system that comes with surround sound, a huge screen TV and a DVR crammed full of movies and TV shows.
  • Solar powered electric shaver
  • Lifetime supply of Wonka Exceptionals Fruit Jellies in varying flavors.

Thank you D. ReneeBagby for stopping by and putting up with my questions.  Renee can be found at her website FaceBook and Twitter
